ITV Graduates Career Advice – 25th June 2010
MD of Personal Career Management Corinne Mills was a guest on ITV News to talk about the challenges graduates are experiencing in the current economic climate.
See below transcript taken from the live show:
Female presenter: Now, it’s safe to say it’s not a great time to be graduating from university because the country has just come out of a recession and graduate unemployment is at its highest level since the mid 90’s.
Male presenter: It’s no surprise then that a huge jobs fair in the west midlands has been attracting thousands of students. The national graduate exhibition began today and continues tomorrow at the NEC in Birmingham
Female presenter: Our education correspondent Peter Veen has been taking a look.
Peter: Their studies may be over, but their hard work may have only just begun. No one walks into a job these days, not even graduates.
Corinne: Having a degree is always going to be a careers advantage that I would say, but it’s not the be all and end all anymore. One time it was an elite minority that had a degree and you could waltz into what you wanted but that’s no longer the case and I think that as long as graduates are clear about that expectation – it’s not that that’s going to get them in the door, it’s all the other things as well, then they should be ok.
Peter: It’s tough out there and with student numbers rising year on year, it won’t get any easier. Peter Veen, in Birmingham, for central tonight.
